What to Bring

Below please find a check list of things to bring for salmon and trout fishing in Labrador.

This should include:
Fly Fishing:

  • 8.5 to 10 foot graphite fly rod (7,8,9, or 10 weight)
  • floating weight forward (recommended) or double tapered fly line with a minimum of 100yrds of 20lb Dacron backing.
  • tapered or level leaders from 4 to 14 lbs test
  • an assortment of single hook salmon and trout flies: dry, wet, streamer, high water flies (fully dressed) and low water flies (lightly dressed) and nymphs in sizes 2 through 12. The popular colors for salmon flies in this area are green, silver, and black bodied flies with black or brown hair or feather wings. Flies with a florescent butt work best. Local favorites include: Cosseboom style streamers (all 12 standard types), orange and brown bomber bugs, Green Highlander, Annie Greenway, Thunder and Lightning, Blue Charm, various Wulffs, Silver Tip, and all standard trout flies and nymphs.

LIGHT CAST AND LURES ( Spin Casting )

We recommend that you use a monofilament of good quality, 8 to 12 lb test (for non scheduled salmon rivers). A steel leader is not necessary, unless you are fishing for Pike. We also recommend that you use a good quality swivel (with ball-bearings).

We suggest that you carry in your tackle -box, 2 or 3 of each lures, with single hook, listed below:

  • Dare-Devil, red and white, size 1 to 3
  • Meps, white with red dots - black with orange dots - silver with blue dots. Size 1-3
  • Nebco Pixies, with orange center or blue center or pink center. Size 1-3
  • Cleo-Littie, the one with a woman pictures on back, blue or orange or red.Size 1-3
  • Crocodile or Aligator, weavy. Size 1 to 3
  • Gator, fluorescent orange or green. Size 1 to 4
  • Veltic, silver and red, or goid and red. Size 1 to 3
  • Trophy (Wablers), mostly for Lake Trout. Size, maximum 4 inches
  • Cyclops, for lake trout, ail fluorescent colors. Size 1 ta 5 inches
  • Minnow type Rapala, floating jointed or straight, fluorescent orange or blue. 4'' to 6''
We wish to remind you that fish caught in Labrador are trophy caliber. Fishing rods and reels should therefore be robust and you should bring duplicates. Your guide will supply a suitable landing-net.

Remember:
You must bring a SLEEPING BAG light and comfortable from 32F. In Labrador the nights are cool even in the summer and when the stove goes out in the early hours of the morning,you will appreciate this important item. We supply the pillows.


Accessories:
Insect repellent cantaining 90 ta 99 % of Deet (Muskol),and/or bug proof jacket. Repair kit to repair waders, (if necessary) solar-cream, filtering sunglasses, lypsil for lips, fish handling gloves,small backpack, rain gear,clothing ( warm & cool weather ), specialty tobacco and/or alcohol that may not be available locally, extra batteries and film for cameras.
