The
Arctic char's willingness to take a wide variety
of foods explains why it is one of the easiest
salmonids to catch on hook and line. The fish
are easily taken on streamers and will sometimes
rise to dry flies, but most anglers rely on
flashy spoons.
Sea-run
char are formidable fish, reaching weights of
25 pounds and waging a powerful fight when hooked.
It's not unusual for one to catapult from the
water several times. But the fish "lose steam"
after they've been in the stream for a long
period of time.
Large
numbers of Arctic char overwinter in tundra
lakes where native anglers ice-fish for them
using primitive gear—usually a short stick and
a spoon tied to a heavy string. Heavy casting
spoons are ideal for catching char because you
can cast them a long distance and they stay
down in the current.
Fly

explore totally untouched waters even deeper
in the wilderness.
